Why book bans?
I grew up reading books about far away worlds with dragons and fairies, about the way our world works, about the animals that live in harmony with us. For me, books could be an escape from my day-to-day life, they could also be a mirror. Between the shelves I found tales about people like me, with similar feeling and identities. And if I couldn’t find a book at school, I could get it at home. But not every kid has this privilege.
For students across the nation, the majority of the books they read and interact with are found in their school. When those books are limited, not only is their education is limited, but also their self expression. A book is more than a tale, it is a lesson, it is a perspective, it is someones history. Books foster confidence, empathy, and kindness.
So, if I want to learn about a topic that seems taboo, I should be able to go to a library and check out a book on that topic without a politician's input. We are all unique and we all deserve a chance to see ourselves in the pages of a book.
